Cholesterol is a fatty – wax type substance found in the body. Although the body needs certain amounts of cholesterol, many times most people tend to have elevated levels of cholesterol. There are two types of cholesterol: LDL, known as low-density lipoproteins, and HDL, which is high-density lipoproteins. LDL is referred to as the bad cholesterol; HDL is considered the good cholesterol.

When an individual ends up with high blood cholesterol, higher levels of LDL increase the chance for heart disease; higher HDL levels tend to lower the chance for heart disease. Since cholesterol can be found in many foods, proper nutrition and exercising are very important, as are taking the prescribed medications to help lower cholesterol levels.
